Windows - Set the default audio device

How to check your audio output device:

  1. Right-click on the Start button in the lower left corner
  2. Click Run
  3. Type mmsys.cpl and hit OK
  4. Right-click the output device that should be default and choose "Set as default device". Then, do it again and choose - "Set as default communication device"
    1. For a projector / Newline - it will typically be "Intel Display Audio" or "AMD High Definition Audio Device" or "NVIDIA High Definition Audio"
    2. For a Promethean board with built-in speakers - you will want it set on "Promethean USB Audio"
    3. The internal speakers on a computer are typically labeled "Realtek High Definition Audio" - most desktops that are hooked into a display should not be set to this output, but if you only have a monitor on your desktop, that is usually what you will want it set to
  5. To verify that you have the correct output selected, you can right-click on the device and choose "Test"
  6. Please note that when you hook in a new display (new monitor, new projector, etc...) - it is typically expected for that new display to become default
