Unmute Microphone - Windows

How to check your laptop microphone status (for use in Google Meet, other web conferencing tools):

  1. Right-click on the Start button in the lower left corner
  2. Click Run
  3. Type mmsys.cpl and hit OK
  4. Click on the Recording tab
  5. Look for the Microphone (double-click it) - it might be called "Microphone Array"
  6. Go to Levels
  7. Make sure there isn’t a mute icon next to the volume slider (it will have a red X - click it to clear that)

For most of the staff laptops, pressing Fn + F8 should also unmute the microphone. If there is a red/amber light on the F8 key that is probably indicative of the problem.
